Russia exceeds 280,000 coronavirus cases with a rebound of 9,709 daily positives

Russia registered 9,709 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the last day, accumulating more than 280,000 infections, the national center against COVID-19 reported, APA reports.

“In the last 24 hours, 9,709 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in 85 regions of Russia, including 4,116 cases without clinical symptoms (42.4%),” says the official statement.

The accumulated number of infections in Russia amounts to 281,752, which represents an increase of 3.6%.

On May 16, 9,200 infections were reported, the lowest number of daily positives since the beginning of the month.

The largest increases in new daily cases occurred in the Russian capital (3,855), in the province of Moscow (907) and in Saint Petersburg (451).

A total of 94 coronavirus patients have succumbed in the past 24 hours, bringing COVID-19-associated deaths in Russia to 2,631.

Moscow accounts for most of the new daily deaths, 71.

On the last day, 4,207 patients overcame the disease, bringing the total number of recovered to 67,373.

Currently, Russia is the second in the world in number of infections and COVID-19 tests, after the US.

Since March 11, the World Health Organization has classified the COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019 as a pandemic.

Globally, more than 4.6 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus have been registered to date, including almost 312,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
