Baku: Pashinyan, by talking about democracy, aims to legitimize his coming to power through coup d'état
Instead of respecting NATO's statement adopted at the level of heads of state and government, Armenia’s populist prime minister is trying to raise groundless claims, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hikmat Hajiyev told APA on Friday.
Hajiyev was commenting on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's speech at the NATO summit on Afghanistan.
The final statement of the NATO summit reiterated the member countries’ support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, stating that the conflict should be resolved on the basis of these principles, noted the spokesperson.
He added that the document called “Partnership Priorities”, signed between the European Union and Azerbaijan, also expressed support and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan and the inviolability of its borders.
Hajiyev emphasized that mutual respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty of states and the inviolability of borders are the basic principles of intergovernmental relations, a political and international legal obligation and civilized behavior.
"The fact that Armenia is turning a blind eye to the resolutions of the UN Security Council, as well as to the decisions and resolutions of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the OSCE, NATO, the Council of Europe and other international institutions shows that there is a huge gap between Armenia and the international community,” he said.
He went on to say that Armenia’s authorities, instead of taking constructive steps towards a negotiated settlement of the conflict, try to escalate the situation by setting conditions for negotiations, illegally visiting the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, deploying additional troops in the occupied lands, and taking other adventurous steps.
The Armenian prime minister, by talking about democracy, aims to legitimize his coming to power through coup d'état, Hajiyev stressed.
“If Pashinyan wants to prove his commitment to democracy and human rights, then Armenia must respect international obligations, withdraw its troops from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, and not prevent Azerbaijani IDPs, subjected to ethnic cleansing, from exercising the right to return to their native lands,” he added.
