"As it is clear, support has been expressed to the initiative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on holding a special session of the UN General Assembly (GA), dedicated to the fight against coronavirus pandemics via videoconferencing, by a significant number of countries, which exceeds the number required by Procedure Rules", Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.

It has been noted that UN Secretary-General sent a note to all member states on June 30, 2020 and noted that the initiative is supported by most of the UN member states and the 31st special session of the General Assembly will be convened on July 10, according to relevant articles of the Procedure Rules of the General Assembly.

“We would want to note that there is not an agreed format and modalities for holding official meetings of the General Assembly virtually and modalities of the current session will be agreed among member states like the previous special sessions.

Reviewing procedure issues is planned at the beginning of the special session, then a segment of general discussions, in which national speeches will be heard, will be held in the next stage.

Representing the chairperson of the 74th session of General Assembly, the head of Nigerian delegation will act as an interim chairman of the special session.

We believe that the special session to be started on July 10, will contribute to increasing the solidarity of world states in the fight against the pandemic, to strengthen international cooperation and to find an international response to this global threat.

We once again express our gratitude to each country which supports the initiative of Azerbaijan and wish success to the work of the special session,” it was noted.
