Iran on Saturday enforced a 10-day restriction throughout the country to curb the recent resurgence of coronavirus cases and deaths, APA reports citing Press TV.
"From Saturday on, for at least ten days, travel to and from high-risk cities will be banned and non-essential businesses have to roll down their shutters. Schools, entertainment centers, and all public places will also be closed," the Iranian news network Press TV reported.
Meanwhile, Tehran will not embrace a total lockdown as the capital city "accommodates major national and international activities," the report added, citing Iranian health officials.
The country now is facing the fourth wave of COVID-19 infection as its national caseload surpassed 2 million earlier this week.
The authorities blamed the new surge mostly on the variant of coronavirus, and believed that travels and visits during the Iranian New Year holidays are also responsible for the fourth wave of the pandemic.
The Iranian Health Ministry on Saturday reported 19,666 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 2,049,078.
The pandemic has so far claimed 64,232 lives in Iran, up by 193 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.
A total of 1,702,062 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 4,329 remain in intensive care units, she noted.
The spokeswoman added that 13,577,057 tests have so far been carried out across the country.
