Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and China’s President Xi Jinping made history on Wednesday by conducting the first ever phone call held between presidents of the two countries.

During their conversation, the pair discussed an important upcoming anniversary - 2022 marks 30 years since Israel and China first established diplomatic ties.

To commemorate the occasion, Xi and Herzog invited extended offers to each other to visit their respective countries, according to a press release from Herzog’s office.

China’s leader recognized that Herzog's father, the sixth president of Israel, Chaim Herzog, also made history between Israel and China.

The late leader was the first Israeli president to visit China after forming official relations with the country.

The conversation additionally focused on issues of regional importance, namely Israel’s worries on the developments made within Iran’s nuclear program.

Herzog briefed China’s leader on his concerns regarding Iran’s regional activities, and stressed that the country should be prevented from reaching nuclear weapons capabilities.

He explained that Tehran’s nuclear progress would pose a threat to stability in the Middle East.

The pair expressed their desire to see more demonstrations of Israel-China cooperative initiatives in the future, which would be formulated through the fifth iteration of the China-Israel Joint Committee for Innovation Cooperation, expected to commence in January 2022.
