Baku. Shamil Alibeyli – APA. Dubai has been chosen to host the 2020 World Expo, the first time a middle eastern state has been selected, APA reports quoting Euronews.

The United Arab Emirates hope staging the event will bring in billions of euros in investment, and cement Dubai’s reputation as an open global centre.

Dubai fought off three challengers, Sao Paulo, which fell in the first round of voting, Izmir, which fell in the second, and Yekaterinburg, which got 47 final-round votes to Dubai’s 116.

Six and a half billion euros will be spent on venues and upgraded infrastructure for the expo.

UAE Ambassador to Azerbaijan Salem Al-Gafri told APA that it is the biggest event in the history of his country: “This event coincides with the 42nd anniversary of the unification of the UAE and rejoiced the people. Holding the 2020 World Expo in Dubai will attract the world community to the UAE within 10 years. This historic victory has proved once again that the UAE has a great respect in the world.”
