“We reiterate our unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and are concerned by the presence of a MiG-29 aircraft in Georgian airspace without Georgian authorization, and by the use of weapons from this aircraft in shooting down an unarmed Georgian aircraftâ€, US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said in the statement. McCormack said in his statement that Russian overtures to Abkhazia and South Ossetia “challenge Georgian sovereignty and call into question whether Russia can continue to function as a facilitator toward a solution in the regionâ€.
The issue was discussed in UN Security Council on April 23, but no document was adopted regarding that. Three members of the UN Security Council – US, Britain and France, as well as Germany have issued a joint communiqué. David Barkadze, the Georgian Foreign Minister told journalists that they had expressed concern over the Russia’s decision to support Abkhazian and South Ossetian practical authorities without the Georgian authorization. World leading countries called on Russia to recall or not to implement its decision.
