Roots of peace: About 1 mln landmines and UXOs were buried in territories of Azerbaijan

Founder and CEO of Roots of Peace organization Heidi Kühn addressed an online appeal to the participants of the International Conference on "Mine Action - The Path to Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals" held in Baku, APA reports.

Recalling her visit to Azerbaijan a while ago, she said that she heard and listened to the painful stories of people and women who suffered from landmines during the visit.

"We must turn mined areas into gardens. Today, about 60 countries are contaminated with about 100 mln. mines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs). Azerbaijan is one of these countries. About 1 mln landmines and UXOs were buried in the territories of Azerbaijan.

We must unite and work to clear mines and prevent new ones from being planted. We must unite for humanity," she stressed.
