The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is anxious about the Montgomery’s disease virus found in Georgia and stated that the virus can spread in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia. Press Secretary of State Veterinary Service under Agriculture Ministry Yolchu Khanveli told the APA that import of pork and pork products from Georgia to Azerbaijan has been temporarily banned to prevent spread of the virus in Azerbaijan.
Besides, regional veterinary departments are given instructions to keep swine in close places, limit access to the farms and disinfect the farms.
World Health Organization office in Azerbaijan told the APA that the organization’s expert group is not expected to visit or give any instructions regarding the disease.
Only swine are infected with Montgomery’s disease, it does not pose threat for people. Some 20,000 swine have been infected with the disease. There are no vaccines. /APA/
