Today, IX Global Baku Forum hosted a panel on "Human Rights, Democracy and New Challenges in the 21st Century" APA reports.

The panel was moderated by former Vice President of World Bank, (1992-2000), co-chair of Nizami Ganjavi International Center Ismail Serageldin.

Former President of Croatia (2015-2020) Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said that the factors in every democratic system should be highlighted: “I want especially to emphasize freedom of speech and opinion. When the government makes decisions about my future, it should consider my opinion. We need to talk to people and consider their rights.

Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center and former President of Latvia (1999-2007), stressed that the rule of law is a key factor: "People should struggle to express different views."

The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva said that the Ombudsman Institute in Azerbaijan is an independent institution protecting human rights: "We are already celebrating our 20th anniversary."
