US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Iran for a "blatant assault" on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, APA reports citing BBC.

He said the US had made its assessment based on intelligence about the type of weapons used. “It is the assessment by the United States government that the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for the attacks that occurred in the Gulf of Oman today."

"This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication," Pompeo told reporters at the US State Department.

A senior Iranian official earlier told the BBC: "Iran has no connection with the incident."

Dozens of crew members were rescued after explosions on the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous and the Front Altair, owned by Norway.
