Azerbaijan's establishment of a checkpoint on the Lachin-Khankendi road means a radical change in the situation in the South Caucasus, Director of the Russian Institute of Political Studies, well-known political scientist Sergey Markov said, APA's Moscow bureau reports.

"On April 23, Azerbaijan established its checkpoint on the Lachin road, where the connection between Armenia and Karabakh passes. Azerbaijan has officially declared that this checkpoint is necessary in order to prevent mines from being transported to Karabakh. There are numerous examples of Armenia laying mines produced in 2021 in those areas.

The checkpoint is required to ensure that the Armenian military garrison in Karabakh does not rotate. That is why it is critical to restrict the transfer of natural resources from Karabakh, and finally to prevent the transportation of weapons to Karabakh," emphasized the Russian political scientist.

According to Markov, everyone in Armenia is sure that Azerbaijan built these checkpoints in agreement with Russia: "Because Russia considers Pashinyan as a traitor. Armenia urges its allies, the United States and France, to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan. The US, France and the EU have already supported Armenia. This support is in the word."

Political expert believes that the situation in the South Caucasus is getting clearer.

"Armenia has betrayed Russia and is moving towards France and the US. Russia is increasingly considering Azerbaijan as its ally. This is a new reality in the South Caucasus. We warned about this a long time ago," added Markov.
