A fight at a Texas high school ended in gunfire on Wednesday morning, sending three people to a hospital and spurring a search for the suspect who fled the scene, police said.

At least two of the four injured people, one of whom did not require hospitalization, suffered gunshot wounds, police said. Three were students at Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, they said, APA reports quoting Reuters.

"I just want to emphasize that this is not a random act of violence," Arlington Assistant Police Chief Kevin Kolbye told reporters.

"What we believe happened, preliminarily, is that there was a fight between a student and another individual in a class and a gun was used, and there are four victims," he said.

Kolbye said he did not know the severity of the wounds of the gunshot victims.

Police quickly identified the 18-year-old suspect who left the school's sprawling campus by car.

The incident, first reported at about 9:15 a.m. local time, on the second floor of the school, prompted a lockdown and a massive police response to secure the building before students were placed on buses and taken off the campus.
