Huawei Technologies will reduce its smartphone production by more than 60% to around 70-80 million this year, Nikkei said, APA reports citing Teletrader.

The Chinese technology giant told suppliers that its component orders used in smartphone output would significantly decline in 2021 as sanctions imposed by the United States continued to loom over the company's business.

Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei recently commented on the sanctions, saying that he "would welcome" a phone call from President Joe Biden. The company dropped last year to the third spot in the global smartphone industry, and is currently positioned behind Samsung Electronics and Apple.
