Russia could raise the draft age this spring, Andrei Kartapolov, Chairman of the Russian Parliament's Defence Committee, said in an interview Thursday, APA reports citing Teletrader.

According to the lawmaker, Russia could increase the upper age limit for conscription to 30 years for compulsory military service. However, the proposal would only be fully implemented after a "transition period" of one to three years in which the lower limit could be lifted from 18 to 21, Kartapolov said.

The age of conscription has become an essential issue for the Russian military following increased Western military support for Ukraine. Reflecting on the same topic earlier, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin "conceptually supported" the idea but noted that the exact details depended on the Defense Ministry.
