Austria's Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg announced on Wednesday his country would reopen the border with Italy on June 16 following the height of the coronavirus pandemic. However, Austria will issue a partial travel warning for Lombardy, Italy's hardest-hit region during the COVID-19 crisis, APA reports citing Teletrader.

Meanwhile, Germany also announced it is lifting border controls with Switzerland, France, Austria, and Denmark on June 15.

Last week, the European Commission called on EU member countries to lift border restrictions for travelers within the bloc by the end of June, while the external borders of the Schengen Area could reopen in July.
