Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt stated on Tuesday that Oslo needs to communicate with Russia and keep watch on the military situation in the Arctic amid the Ukraine crisis, APA reports citing Teletrader.

Speaking at the Arctic Frontiers conference 2023 in Tromso, the minister vowed that Norway will "continue to provide substantial military, economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine," noting that her country's bilateral cooperation with Russia "has been reduced to a minimum." Still, Huitfeldt stressed "we cannot change our geography. Russia is Norway’s neighbor," going on to say that Oslo and Moscow must maintain enough contact "to minimize the risk of misunderstandings and unintentional escalation in the Arctic."

She confirmed that Norway monitors "military activity closely," increasing its defense presence and coordinating activities with allies. The Nordic country last week promised to deliver two Leopard tanks to Kyiv.
