Russia will likely control the whole of the Luhansk region in the next two weeks, the UK’s Ministry of Defense has said, adding that Russia controls more than 90 percent of the Luhansk region, one of the two regions that make up the Donbas, APA reports citing Aljazeera.

But although Russia currently appears to hold the initiative over Ukrainian opposition in the Donbas, Moscow’s “tactical successes” have come at a “significant resource cost”, the ministry said in its latest intelligence briefing.

Measured against Russia’s original plan to take the capital Kyiv and Ukrainian centers of government “none of the strategic objectives have been achieved,” the ministry said.

“In order for Russia to achieve any form of success will require a continued huge investment of manpower and equipment and is likely to take considerable further time,” it added.
