"Germany-Azerbaijan cooperation has a long history. Azerbaijan was a shelter for many German families. Hunger and misery forced them to leave their country," said Bundestag Vice President Thomas Oppermann at the OSCE PA President at the Parliamentary Conference on Regional Security and Cooperation and the founding conference of the “Baku Parliamentary Platform for Dialogue and Cooperation”.

He stated that there are traces of German emigrants in Baku. There are German churches in Goygol and Shamkir districts.
According to him, during the Soviet period the relations between Azerbaijan and Germany have been weakened: “German towns demolished, 45000 Germans sent to exile to Siberia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan turned out to be 5th oil supplier of Germany. The German language has become a very important language in Azerbaijan after the English and Russian languages.

Bundestag Vice President also touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: "For many decades the conflict continues in Nagorno-Karabakh and mainly people suffer from it. Germany will remain a reliable partner for both Azerbaijan and Armenia, and Germany has the chance to act as a mediator. We hope that the conflict will be resolved peacefully."
