Strong protest from Azerbaijan to UN: Head of Country Office of the UN Population Fund summoned to Azerbaijan's Presidential Administration

The head of the Country Office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was invited today to the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and concern was delivered to him about a biased, untrue statement made by the organization on January 24 about the situation on Lachin road, APA reports.

The Azerbaijani side noted that when our territories were under occupation, various UN organizations said "We are the humanitarian organization, and we don't get involved in political issues" in a response to the legitimate issues raised by Azerbaijan and they were pulling themselves aside. However, after Azerbaijan liberated its lands from occupation, now the same organizations forget that they are humanitarian organizations and are dealing with political issues. In this regard, such "political activism" of UNFPA, whose mandate consists of issues such as sexual and reproductive health and childbirth, is unclear and unacceptable.

According to one more information, Armenia has increased its efforts in the direction of sending a UN mission to our territories where Russian peacekeepers are temporarily stationed, as well as providing humanitarian aid by the various UN organizations. It has been known that even some UN organizations conduct discussions in this direction without consulting with the Azerbaijan side.

In this regard, the head of UNFPA’s Azerbaijani office was informed that Armenia and its supporters try to turn the UN into political tool in its hideous smearing campaign. The purpose of Armenia and its supporters is to enter Azerbaijan’s sovereign areas and deal with political buffoonery under the guise of humanitarianism. The UN, in its turn, should be the victim of such hideous games, must protect its independence, impartiality and should put an end to double standards and selective approach that it demonstrates toward the countries.

Azerbaijani side emphasized that it does not see any role of the UN, in our areas where Russian peacekeepers temporarily stationed and it will not allow sending the UN mission to our sovereign territories or the activity of various organizations under the guise of humanitarian aid.

According to the information, UNFPA official noted that Azerbaijan’s concern will be conveyed accordingly.
