Within the framework of the working visit to Germany, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, APA reports.

At the meeting, the German President noted that his country supported the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and hoped that a peace treaty would be signed between the two countries soon. German President emphasized that his country, as a member state of the European Union, supports Brussel's peace agenda implemented by the mediation of the President of the European Union Charles Michele.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan was the initiator of the signing of the peace agreement, and for this purpose, Azerbaijan put forward 5 principles. The head of the state emphasized that currently, in the direction of the signing of the peace agreement, contacts were continued between the sides. President Ilham Aliyev expressed once again Azerbaijan’s commitment to Brussel’s agenda, launched by the initiative of Charles Michele. It was noted that the statements adopted on the basis of the Brussels platform form the basis of the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany once again expressed his country's support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. Germany's president expressed his hope that a meeting between the heads of state of Azerbaijan and Armenia will be soon held in Brussels.

Later, the President of Azerbaijan spoke about regional issues. President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that all forms and manifestations of separatism are unacceptable and noted the need for a unified approach to separatism. At the same time, the President of Azerbaijan touched on the non-constructive position of Armenia.

Armenia’s use of Lachin road for military and illegal transportation, Russian Peacekeepers’ still maintaining their military presence in our territory, and the existence of military equipment belonging to Armenia was brought to the attention of the German president. Touching on the protest action held on Lachin road, the President of Azerbaijan said that it is against the illegal transportation of Armenia through the Lachin road. President Ilham Aliyev noted that the construction of a border checkpoint on the last point of Lachin road – on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border- is now necessary.

During the meeting, the head of state touched upon the issue of the Zangazur corridor and pointed out that the corridor can create an alternative corridor for the entire region. On the other hand, it was emphasized that Armenia is preventing the Zangazur Corridor from being realized by refusing to fulfill the obligations assumed by the trilateral declaration.

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany thanked the President of Azerbaijan for the detailed information provided. During the meeting, regional and global issues were exchanged.
Note that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is one of the politicians who are quite familiar with the South Caucasus region.

Steinmeier, who visited the region many times in the status of the acting chairman of the OSCE during Germany's chairmanship of the OSCE, has enough information about the history and course of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Generally, recently, it is observed that Germany is active in the South Caucasian region. A while ago, Steinmeier's made a call to President Ilham Aliyev, inviting the President of Azerbaijan for a working trip, and the conducted discussions are clear examples of this. This once again shows that Germany also well understands the importance of Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus region and highly appreciates the role of our country in the implementation of contacts with Central Asian countries. It is obvious that Germany is currently reviewing its relations with the countries of Central Asia, and official Berlin understands well that Azerbaijan's relations with the regional countries are of decisive importance in the development of relations and building communications with Central Asia.
