Voters in Uzbekistan have backed constitutional changes in the Central Asian country, APA reports citing France 24.

The Central Election Commission on Monday said the constitutional amendments passed with 90.21% of the vote, based on preliminary results. Turnout was reported at 84.54%. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which was conducted a "limited observation mission," was due to share its initial findings on the poll later the same day.

Amendments to the Constitution are aimed at strengthening the functions of Parliament to appoint the heads of supervisory and law enforcement agencies. In addition, it is proposed to increase the term of the presidency from 5 to 7 years.
