List of candidates to Ombudsman position recommended for consideration at plenary session of Azerbaijan’s Parliament

Today, a meeting of the Human Rights Committee of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament) has been held, APA reports.

The issue of candidacy to the position of Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan Republic has been brought up for discussion at the meeting. The candidacy of 3 persons has been put forward in the document sent to the National Parliament by President Ilham Aliyev. Those candidates are Kamala Abiyeva, Deputy Chairwoman of Baku Court of Appeal, Kamala Aliyeva, Head of the Human Rights and Public Relations Division of Supreme Court and Sabina Aliyeva, Deputy Head of Administrative Office of Constitution Court.

Chairwoman of Human Rights Committee of National Parliament Bahar Muradova said that President Ilham Aliyev had given great credence to 3 persons: “I think a person to be chosen as Ombudsman will give her practical positive contribution to the matter of protection of human rights and will justify the President’s confidence”.

After discussion, the issue was recommended for consideration at the plenary session of the National Parliament.

Note that currently, Elmira Suleymanova acts as Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner. She has been acting as Ombudsman since 2002. Her tenure has expired on March 5, 2017.
