"We are looking to intensify our cooperation with Azerbaijan in the light of the strategic importance of the Southern Gas Corridor," said press service of the European Commission in a response to APA's query.

"As you are well aware, we do not comment on leaked documents that aren’t approved by the College of Commissioners.

For your background, as we said in our external energy strategy published in May alongside the REPowerEU Plan, we are looking to intensify our cooperation with Azerbaijan in the light of the strategic importance of the Southern Gas Corridor. This is clearly part of our efforts to diversify away from Russian fossil fuels. Scaling up the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) capacity would increase the gas supply to the EU and to the Western Balkan countries.

Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson is travelling to Azerbaijan this month," noted press service.
