"We respect and fully support choice and decision of people and government of Sweden on NATO membership," said President of the European Council Charles Michel at a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, APA reports.

"We believe that the choice will be effective for both NATO and the EU and will further strengthen security in Europe. We believe that negotiations among NATO allies on the issue will result positively," Charles Michel has stressed.

Michel has noted that strengthening the defense capabilities of EU countries, energy issues, situation in Ukraine, and sanctions against Russia have also been discussed at the meeting.

Answering a question about putting an embargo on Russian oil, Charles Michel has said that the issue is on an agenda and being discussed: "I am sure we will be able to resolve the issue. Dialogue, political efforts are important for it and we seriously work on it."

President of the European Council has added that the solidarity, demonstrated by the EU, has surprised President Putin: "I am sure that Russia has not expected EU's being so strong and determined before starting the war."
