"Demining should not be the sole responsibility of countries that suffer from it. Other countries, the international community, the opposite side should share the responsibility in this matter and help the country suffering from landmines," said former President of the Republic of Croatia Stjepan Mesić during his speech at the International Conference on "Mine Action - The Path to Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals" held in Baku, APA reports.

He stressed that civilians are seriously suffering from landmines.

He informed about the process of combating mines and demining in his country.

"The process of demining in Croatia is still ongoing. The main reason for this is the lack of mine maps. Demining should not be the sole responsibility of the countries that suffer from it. Other countries, the international community, and the opposite side should share the responsibility in this matter, help the country suffering from mines, the victim must help the country in demining and construction work. We have a responsibility to future generations, so we must not only engage in demining and fighting mines, but most importantly fight for peace and cooperation, not war and conflict," he noted.

Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Conference on Disarmament Ambassador Thomas Goebel, who spoke at the panel, emphasized the importance of the Ottawa Convention.

He said that this Convention is also one of the main mechanisms for achieving the goals of sustainable development, especially for achieving a mine-free world.

"Anti-personnel mines create serious difficulties and threats to people's way of life. Preventing the spread of anti-personnel mines will guarantee the safety of people's lives and future generations," he said.
