Memorandum of Understanding signed between Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network and ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly-PHOTO

Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis, who is currently on a working visit in the capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Manama, has had a meeting as a part of the visit with Secretary General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Siti Rozaimeriyanty Dato Haji Abdul Rahman, APA reports citing the press service of the Milli Majlis.

During the conversation, the high standards set by the cooperation between the Azerbaijani legislature and the AIPA, as well as the Milli Majlis' status as an observer with the AIPA last year, were brought up. It was pointed out that normally parliaments had to wait 2-3 years to obtain this status, whereas our country's application was approved immediately.

Sahiba Gafarova said, speaking as Chair of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, that this Network was eager to establish active ties with inter-parliamentary entities including AIPA. Her narrative about the work and workings of the NAM PN included the reference to the broad international support for the substantive initiatives proposed by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev in his capacity as NAM Chair. According to Gafarova, the NAM Parliamentary Network, the fruit of one of such initiatives, is attracting increasing international attention in light of the Network's inaugural session in Madrid in 2021, its first conference in Baku, and preparations for the second conference, which is set to take place in the Bahraini capital tomorrow. At the same time, the Network's cooperation with other inter-parliamentary organizations is expanding, as it has become an observer in three inter-parliamentary entities: the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States, and the Arab Parliament.

The Secretary General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly praised Azerbaijan's successful presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, emphasizing the broad international support for our country's efforts to ensure the Network's institutional development.

Following an exchange of views on several issues of mutual interest, the conversation concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
