Director of LINKS Europe Dennis Sammut who gave speech at panel discussion of the International Conference on "Mine Action - The Path to Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals" held in Baku, stressed that he was horrified by what he saw in Ağdam city of Azerbaijan, APA reports.
He stressed that Azerbaijan can lead in the field of demining.
"600 thousand of people cannot return to their lands, these people have been refugees since the 1990s.These mines prevent people from returning to their homes. The international community should help Azerbaijan in this matter. Considering the size of the problem, it can be said that the help given today is like a drop in an ocean. We must work together, focus on the humanitarian sphere of demining. We need to provide technical support,"
He stressed that countries should join the Ottawa Treaty (Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction of 1997).
