ANAS: Caspian Sea can experience Aral sea’s fate

“Studies show that 100 years ago the level of the Caspian Sea was 2 m higher than today,” said the Academician of ANAS Fakhraddin Gadirov at the international conference on Fluctuations in the level of the Caspian Sea under conditions of climate change, forecasting, and adaptation measures, APA reports.

Academicians noted that since 2005, the level decreases by 10 cm every year: “In the 1930th, the level dropped by 1.5 m, however, a rise of 2.7 m occurred in 1978-1995. However, starting from 2005, the level has been dropping by 10 sm per year. If this change continues for 25-30 years, the North-East part of the Caspian sea can experience the fate of the Aral sea. Although trends are observed in the level changes of the Caspian Sea in certain time intervals, fluctuations changes are also observed over them.”
