Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said on Thursday that Japan is considering slimming down the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which have been postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"We will look closely at what should be rationalized and simplified," Koike noted. The organizers could simplify the opening and closing ceremonies and reduce the number of foreign dignitaries attending the event in an effort to cut costs.

Earlier, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee warned that the games may be canceled altogether if the COVID-19 pandemic is not contained until next year.
