President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Pope Francis to assist in releasing Ukrainians who are held captive in Donbas, APA reports citing Ukrinform.

"The pontiff makes every effort to achieve peace and harmony around the world. Two months after Normandy format meeting in Paris, I asked to assist in releasing Ukrainians held captive in Donbas, Crimea and Russia," the President wrote on Twitter.

Zelensky said he was inspired by a conversation with the Pope about peace in Ukraine.

The official visit of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to the Vatican has started today.

On December 9, the meeting of the leaders of the Normandy format countries – Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany – took place in Paris. In particular, Volodymyr Zelensky, Vladimir Putin, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel supported the exchange of detainees in "all-for-all" format until the end of 2019.
