Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Iraq has not received any official notification of Azerbaijani women having been sentenced to capital punishment in the country, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iraq Ramiz Gafarov told APA.
The ambassador said that if the reports turn out to be true, the embassy is willing to provide assistance to the Azerbaijani citizens the best of its ability.
“There are all kinds of news in the media. If that was true, we would have been notified by Iraq’s authorities. Since we have no information, we cannot make an official statement in this regard. The country has a decision. Law is law; somebody who has committed a grave crime is to be brought to responsibility. If they invite us to join this process, we’re ready to be of help. As an embassy, we’re officially obliged to provide necessary assistance to our citizens,” Gafarov added.
The ambassador also touched upon the issue of Azerbaijani children in Iraq.
“Work is underway with Iraqi authorities in regard to the Azerbaijani children left in this country. Work is ongoing in relation to not only imprisoned Azerbaijani women, but also children. We are following the process. We carry out official assignments. The necessary measures are being taken. Official documents are being processed, meetings are being held,” the diplomat said.
He stressed that Azerbaijan and Iraq enjoy friendly ties.
“We are ready for all negotiations related to Azerbaijani women and children in Iraq. These issues are on the agenda,” Gafarov added.
Iraq’s Al-Sumaria TV channel earlier reported that the country’s Central Criminal Court sentenced one Kyrgyz and three Azerbaijani women to death sentence, and one French and two Russian women to life sentence on charges of alleged links to ISIL.
