"Mines seriously hinder the development of countries," Member of the British Parliament Matthew Offord said during his speech at the panel discussion of the International Conference on "Mine Action - The Path to Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals" held in Baku, APA reports.

Citing the example of mines in Vietnam and Cambodia, he said that this has created a serious problem for the development of these countries over the years: "Therefore, demining is rightfully one of the goals of sustainable development. At the same time, this process requires large financial resources. I appreciate that the government of Azerbaijan has made this issue a national priority. Demining is important for the country's progress. Azerbaijan's experience can be an example for other countries. I believe that Ukraine will take an example from Azerbaijan's road map regarding mine clearance."

He emphasized that the other main goal is to use the demined areas, to benefit from these areas: "We must solve this problem and not keep it for future generations."
