The President of the International Charitable Fund of Mountain Jews STMEGI, Vice-President of the Russian Jewish Congress German Zakharyaev on his Facebook page came up with an initiative to perpetuate the memory of the warrior-tanker, the National Hero of Azerbaijan, a Jew of origin Albert Agarunov in the city of Shusha liberated from Armenian occupation, APA reports.

According to German Zakharyayev, the naming of streets in honor of heroes is a tradition that emerged many centuries ago. He writes: “Thanks to this tradition, the names of heroic sons and daughters of the people have always been spoken of, their memory lives on, the representatives of the young generation also mention their name.

Today we rejoice together with the Azerbaijani people at its victory, retaking of its ancestral lands. But however, we shouldn’t forget the whole history of the conflict that has been lasting for about 30 years”.

German Zakharyayev notes that at the beginning of the 1990s, all residents of Azerbaijan including Jews rallied to the defense of Motherland. The head of STMEGI fund writes: “Tank operator Albert Agarunov was killed in the battles going on near Shusha – the pearl of Garabagh Khanate, that returned to its legal owners just now. In my opinion, if one of the streets of this city is named after Albert Agarunov, this would be a fair step, the people would always remember its hero”.

Zakharyayev writes: “I intend to appeal to Azerbaijan’s leadership with such an initiative. I hope that this initiative will be supported”.

Remind that Alber Agarunov was given the title of Azerbaijan’s National Hero (after his death) on June 7, 1992, for the bravery and courage shown by him during the defense of territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, for ensuring of security of peaceful citizens. He was buried in Baku, in Martyrs’ Alley.

The National Hero medal of Albert Agarunov was presented then by President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev to Albert’s sister Sofya Mammadova.

Baku city secondary school #154 finished by Albert Agarunov bears his name. The hero’s bust is put in front of the school building. The fresh flowers are always laid in front of A.Agarunov’s mini-memorial open in the school, the school events are held in front of his bust.

The memory plate of the National Hero is fixed on the wall of one of the buildings in the street named in the honor of Albert Agarunov in a Red settlement situated in Guba region. In 2017, the memory plate was fixed on wall of the house where A. Agarunov once lived in the Amirjan settlement of Baku.

On November 15, 2019, the solemn ceremony of the opening of the monument of Azerbaijan’s National Hero Albert Agarunov took place in the Narimanov district of Baku.
