"We say about Afghanistan that they should do this, they should do that. But the important issue is that what can we do? Occurrences pose questions regarding activity of the US and West in Afghanistan over the recent 20 years. What have we been able to achieve there?" said High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell at his speech at the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament held regarding Afghanistan in a hybrid form, APA reports.
According to him, the fight against Al-Qaeda and its removal have been the main purpose in Afghanistan: "It is noted firstly while commenting on Afghanistan. But fight against terrorism has become attempt at the establishment of a modern state in Afghanistan gradually. Although the US President Joe Boden says that the establishment of a state in Afghanistan is not the main target.
We have done much work in order to establish the modern state in Afghanistan, made efforts. Such a country that it would guarantee the power of law, legal management, and the protection of human rights, especially the defense of rights of women, girls, and ethnic minorities. After 20 years, we can say that we have been successful at the first stage of our mission, but in the second stage, we have failed. With this mission, we have to ask difficult questions ourselves regarding all of these happening”.
He noted that there are many lessons to be learned from the failure of state-building in Afghanistan: “President had resources. During just these years, the US has spent 300 mln dollars per day on Afghanistan, but the results are obvious. As Western countries, we have to ask ourselves that where did we make a mistake?”.
