117 people infected with HIV in Azerbaijan in three months of this year

117 people were infected with HIV in the past 3 months this year in Azerbaijan, State Commission on Fight Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking told APA.

In total, 8,805 people, whose HIV diagnosis was confirmed, have been registered in the Azerbaijan National Center for Control of HIV/AIDS of the Ministry of Health from 1988 until March of 2021 (8,506 of them are Azerbaijani citizens, while 299 are foreigners).

6,316 people, infected with HIV, are men and 2,489 are women. In 3,396 of them, HIV infection occurred as a result of injecting drug use. 2,694 people from this category are currently registered in dispensaries.

In the first quarter of 2021, 15 out of 121 patients involved in antiretroviral therapy (ART) were injecting drug users. As of March 31, 2021, the total number of HIV patients involved in ART was 6,990, of which 2,274 are injecting drug users.
