Liu Xiaoming, Beijing's special representative on Korean Peninsula affairs, said China will take "firm and powerful " measures if United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, APA reports citing Teletrader.

The chief nuclear envoy of China said Beijing will "safeguard" its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as the country views Taiwan as a province of the mainland. He also warned Washington it would be "responsible for all serious consequences."

If she goes ahead with the visit, Pelosi will be the highest-level US official to visit Taiwan since the US established diplomatic ties with Beijing over four decades ago.
