Georgia and Armenia sing agreement on supply of electricity in emergency situations

An agreement between Georgian and Armenian authorities on the supply of electricity in emergency situations was signed in a meeting between Georgian Deputy Minister of Economy Romeo Mikautadze and Armenian Deputy Energy Minister Hakob Vardanyan in Tbilisi on Thursday, the Georgian Economy Ministry said, APA reports citing Sputnik Georgia.

Introducing the current trends and plans in Georgia’s domestic energy system, Mikautadze told the Armenian official Georgia was reforming its energy field after joining the European Energy Union in a bid to modernize and strengthen the sector.

Speaking about the ongoing and planned projects to make the country's energy system “more sustainable and less dependent” on external factors, Mikautadze stressed the importance of interstate cooperation for maintaining energy sustainability and stability in the region.

In further comments, the Georgian Deputy Minister mentioned the Black Sea Cable project, which would connect Georgia with Romania and create new opportunities for increasing electricity exports from Georgia and other countries of the South Caucasus to the European Union.

During the meeting of the working group, held with the support of the Georgian and Armenian offices of the United States Agency for International Development, the officials noted the two countries could further strengthen energy cooperation.
