Dutch State Secretary for Justice and Security Mark Harbers, whose duties covered refugees and asylum in the Netherlands, resigned after his ministry distorted the number of crimes committed by asylum seekers in a report, ONA reports citing Sputnik.

The NL Times cited Harbers telling the parliament that he "felt responsible" for such an interpretation of the figures.

When asked for explanations, he denied deliberately concealing the real numbers, saying that the cases put in the "other" category had not been proven and that some of them were still pending a verdict.

The report in question contained police figures on crimes committed by asylum-seekers in the Netherlands last year. It featured comprehensive data on crimes such as shoplifting or bicycle theft with explicit figures while bulking more serious crimes, including sexual offences, aggravated assaults, manslaughter and murder, under the "other" heading.
