Magnitude 7.5 earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

The US Geological Survey reported Tuesday that a magnitude 7.7 earthquake had struck 33 km off the eastern coast of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, ONA reports citing Sputnik.

The agency has specified that the epicentre of the quake was 10 km below the surface. Following the report about thq quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami.

"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1000KM of the earthquake epicentre".

No information on possible damage or casualties is available.
